Welcome to The Chama Valley Nestled right in the heart of the San Juan Mountains!
Where activities abound any time of the year...

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic R.R. runs May thru October with special rides during the holidays.
But be sure to visit their home page every year they have special train rides from end of October till the holidays.

Both Lake Heron & El Vado are within a short 15-20 minute drive from Chama. There are many activities to enjoy on these lakes: Fishing, Boating, Swimming, Salmon snagging (fall), Hiking, Biking, Camping, Wildflower viewing & of course the Osprey Festival every summer.

The Chama Valley offers great possibilites for wildlife viewing. Our mountains are home to some of the largest Bull Elk & Bucks in the country. You will often see vehicles pulled over in the evenings on the road side. If you look closely you will usually see large herds of Elk or Deer. Chama also has a huge fox population. If you happen to be out late at night driving you may see one dart across the highway.  For more information of fishing & hunting accces/permits go to these sites:

If horseback riding is your pleasure be sure to check the Chamber for local outfitters. A peaceful ride on a sunny crisp Fall day is truly relaxing! Our fall colors are beautiful & the photography opportunities are endless.

Located just down the road from us is the Historic Salmon Ruins in Bloomfield New Mexico. These are 11th Century Pueblo ruins. Located at the site is a museum & information center. A very interesting and insightful place to visit which takes you back into the early lives of the first inhabitants of the area.

For those who like to quilt & weave there are two great festivals every summer:
The Chama Quilt Show  or visit Los Ojos just up the road from Chama for the Tierra Wools weaving festival every spring.

During the summer we have many wonderful festivals. Chama Days is our largest Festival. People come from all over year after year for this celebration of Chama and its people. During your visit don't forget to take a visit to the famous Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu. This is where the famous Georgia O'Keefe painted for 50 years.

Our 4th of July extravaganza which has the most spectacular fireworks show you will ever see is complete with a parade down main street! We also have a Snow Ball Rally Hot Air Balloon Festival here in the Chama Valley. The balloons are always striking against our mountain  backdrops covered in snow.

If your in the need of some nightime excitement the Jicarilla Apache Nugget Casino is just a 20 minute drive from Chama. The Jicarilla Apache also hold some great celebrations every year. The Little Beaver Celebration held the 3rd weekend of July celebrates "The way of Life" and the Go-Jii-Yah Feast celebrated every September 14-15 gives thanks to the harvest & predicts what the winter & next harvest will bring.

Winter is a wonderland here in Chama. We have over 300 days of sunshine a year. Our Night & Day temps can be as different as day and night. The locals can often be seen wearing short sleeves on a winter sunny afternoon. With such beautiful blue skies & warm sunshine outdoor activities are really enjoyable.

Our Chama Chili Ski Classic brings folks from all over who love to play in the snow. There are many adventures here for those who love the white stuff. Cross country ski & snow shoe trails abound, and lets not forget the snowmobiling some of the best in the country!

Just a short drive to the northwest and you come upon Pagosa Springs where you will find some of Colorados best snow & mountain skiing conditions at the Wolf Creek Ski Resort
